Frequently Asked Questions about Therapy and Counselling

  • Therapy is a space where you can talk openly about what’s going on in your life without judgment. My role is to support you, help you gain clarity, and work alongside you to build tools that bring relief and feel genuinely helpful in your day-to-day life.

In our first session, we’ll spend time getting to know each other. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you in, explore your goals, and begin creating a plan that feels supportive and manageable. There’s no pressure to share more than you’re ready to, and we'll move at a pace that feels comfortable and safe for you.

  • The number of sessions depends on your goals and what you’re hoping to achieve in therapy. Sessions are typically 55 minutes long, and many people start weekly, though that can change over time. Some clients only need a few sessions for support and practical tools, while others choose longer-term work to process deeper concerns, trauma, anxiety, repetitive behaviours, or major life transitions. Whether we’re focusing on building coping strategies or gently exploring patterns that feel hard to shift, we’ll move at a pace that feels safe and supportive. We’ll decide together what feels right for you.

  • To get started, you’re welcome to send me an email, call, or text. If you prefer, you can also book a session directly online.

  • Yes, I offer secure online sessions. While I do personally prefer in-person work, many clients find virtual therapy just as effective and often more convenient.

All you need is a private space, a reliable internet connection, and a device with video capability. If video isn’t your preference, telephone sessions are available as well.

  • My fees follow the guidelines set by the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW). Many extended health plans cover therapy with a Registered Social Worker, and you may also be able to claim services as a medical expense at tax time.

You’ll receive a detailed receipt after each session for easy insurance reimbursement, including my name, designation, and registration number.

For payment, you’re welcome to securely store a credit card through Jane (my secure practice management system) for ease and convenience, or you can pay by e-transfer. Whatever feels simplest and most comfortable for you.

  • I know life can be unpredictable and things don’t always go as planned. I’ll always do my best to be flexible when I can.

I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy to keep things fair for everyone. I set that time aside just for you, and it’s usually not possible to fill the spot with short notice. Because of that, sessions cancelled within 24 hours or missed without notice are charged the full session fee.

If you wake up feeling under the weather or something unexpected comes up, no worries at all; we can always switch to a virtual session instead.

  • Yes. What you share in therapy stays private. Confidentiality is an important part of creating a safe and trusting space.

There are a few legal limits (for example, if there are concerns about immediate safety or risk of harm), and we’ll review these together so you feel informed and comfortable from the start.

  • While I offer a variety of evidence-based approaches, I do not currently provide EMDR therapy. If EMDR feels like the right fit, I can connect you with Denise Evans, a trusted colleague who is certified in this approach.

  • If you’re in immediate danger or feeling unsafe, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. You can also call or text 988 to connect with the Suicide Crisis Helpline.

While therapy provides important support, it is not a crisis service. If you need urgent or immediate help, reaching out to emergency services or a crisis line right away is the best next step. Your safety and well-being truly matter.
